Manufacturing Engineer – CNC / Heavy Machining

THE SHORT VERSION
We build the machinery that moves ships. Steel plate comes in the door, and we burn it, fit it, weld it, and machine it into finished components weighing 40,000 pounds and up for the commercial marine, defense, and mining industries.
We need a Manufacturing Engineer on the machining side: horizontal boring mills, large lathes, and everything around them. This is a hands-on job. You will be in the office when you need to be and on the floor the rest of the time.
We are not looking for someone to keep the process running the way it always has. We have been at this since 1958. Some of what we do is proven, and some of it is just old. We want an engineer who can tell the difference, go find a better method, and make it stick.
WHY YOU WOULD WANT THIS JOB
▪ Real ownership. Manufacturing Engineering is a team of five. Nobody will hand you a narrow slice of one process and tell you to stay in it.
▪ The parts are enormous. 40,000 pounds and up, low volume, high mix. Every job is a real engineering problem.
▪ The work matters. Our ATB couplers hold ocean-going tug-and-barge units together in open water and account for half of all US fuel movement by ocean. Our propulsion equipment supports U.S. Navy destroyers, aircraft carriers, and submarines.
▪ Stability. Nearly 70 years in business, approximately 125 people, and a large backlog in marine and defense.
▪ You can actually change things. Make the case for a better method or new technology and you will get a real hearing, without several layers of approval.
▪ First shift, and it does not rotate.

WHAT YOU WILL ACTUALLY BE DOING
Owning the machining processes end to end: how the part gets made, how we prove it is right, and how we make it repeatable. In practice:
▪ CNC programming. Developing, modifying, and reviewing G-code for boring mills, lathes, and other heavy equipment
▪ Machine characterization. Finding out what a machine can actually hold, then building the process around it
▪ Process control. PFMEAs, process control plans, work instructions, and engineering change control
▪ Tooling and new technology. Specifying tooling and equipment, and building the business case for improvements in workholding, probing, metrology, automation, and software
▪ Root cause and corrective action. Leading the effort to cut scrap, rework, repair, and warranty cost
▪ Standard work. Creating it, training it, and driving it across the shop floor
▪ Drawings and layouts. Mechanical drawings for new and existing products, and floor layouts for major factory moves
▪ Cross-functional leadership. Leading peers from production and quality to get jobs out the door on time. Nobody reports to you, so a show-your-work approach is how you get traction.
Requirements
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
Required
▪ Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience in machining or manufacturing
▪ Ability to read and interpret complex drawings, with a working knowledge of GD&T
▪ Hands-on experience with machining, part setup, cutting tools, and materials
▪ Proficiency with Microsoft Office
▪ Comfort working with minimal supervision and setting your own priorities
▪ A real bias toward improvement. “That is how we have always done it” should bother you.
▪ Strong interpersonal skills. You will talk with suppliers, customers, machinists, and engineers, often on the same day.
Strongly Preferred (we will train the right person)
▪ CNC programming experience using G-code
Helpful, But Not Required
▪ APQP tools
▪ CAD/CAM software; we use Autodesk Inventor
▪ Tool path verification and simulation software
▪ Weldments and fit-up processes
▪ Large-part, long-cycle, or low-volume machining
▪ Defense, marine, or other regulated manufacturing
YOU DO NOT NEED TO CHECK EVERY BOX
There is no years-of-experience number on this list, and that is on purpose. We especially want to hear from:
▪ Machinists and CNC programmers ready to move into engineering
▪ Engineers coming out of high-volume work who are tired of optimizing the same part for the ten-thousandth time
▪ Recent graduates with internship or co-op time in manufacturing
▪ Military veterans with machining, maintenance, or mechanical backgrounds
And if you have ever pushed for a new method, machine, or software and been told no, come tell us what you were trying to do.
WHO YOU WOULD WORK WITH You would join a Manufacturing Engineering team of six, reporting to the Manufacturing Engineering Manager alongside engineering technicians and a document control specialist. Manufacturing Engineering partners closely with Quality Assurance, and both report to the VP of Quality and Operational Excellence. You will touch every department and program in the plant, which makes this a strong base whether you want to go deeper technically or move toward leadership.
THE HONEST PART
This role splits time between an office and a manufacturing floor. On the floor, standard PPE is required, and you will be around heavy machinery, cranes, and large parts, with extended standing, bending, and walking. The shop is hot in July and cold in January.
Our machining operations run two shifts. This position is first shift, but on occasion you will come in early or stay late to support training or a hand-off with second shift.
Change here is earned, not announced. Our machinists know these parts better than anyone, and they will listen to a good idea, but you will have to make the case, prove it out, and bring them with you. If that sounds like the fun part, you will like it here.
