Residential Business Development Director

Voltus is the leading platform connecting distributed energy resources to electricity markets, delivering less expensive, more reliable, and more sustainable electricity. Our commercial and industrial customers, along with our residential and grid services partners generate revenue by allowing Voltus to maximize the value of their flexible load, distributed generation, energy storage, energy efficiency, and electric vehicle resources in these markets.

The Role: Voltus is seeking a Residential Business Development Director to build and grow relationships with residential distributed energy resource partners across North America as we expand our virtual power plant network into the residential segment. Forty percent of electrical load is residential, and more residential loads are electrifying, from EVs to heating, with residential battery costs coming down to enable backing up the whole home load.

This role exists to capture that opportunity, recruiting more megawatts of residential load into Voltus VPP programs through partnerships with companies that have flexible residential assets. The right candidate understands how residential DER companies think, has experience managing complex partnership and program development cycles, and knows how to move from a first conversation to a signed contract to a live program. This is an individual contributor role with real room to grow as the function develops.

This is a remote role. Candidates must be based in the United States.

Key Responsibilities

• Build and manage new relationships with residential DER partners across North America, calling on VPs of Grid Services, Directors of Market Development, Chief Revenue Officers, Senior VPs of VPP, Strategy Managers, VPs of Growth, and VPs of New Products and Business.
• Deepen relationships with existing partners and work with them to sell and launch new programs in additional territories and with new asset types.
• Find sustainable business models that balance consumer acquisition fees with profitability for partners and Voltus while incentivizing growth.
• Work cross-functionally with Partnerships, Energy Markets, Product Management, Engineering, Legal, Operations, and Marketing to pitch Voltus as part of a complete, winning solution for residential partners.
• Own the full sales cycle from initial outreach through relationship development, contract negotiation, program launch, and ongoing account management.
• Attend industry conferences and in-person meetings to build relationships and represent Voltus to residential partners.
• Share learnings and progress internally on an ongoing basis to help Voltus refine its residential offerings and competitive positioning.
• Desired Qualifications: 5 to 10 years of experience in business development, partnerships, or sales in the energy industry.
• Experience working at a residential DER OEM, DERMS, VPP platform, or demand response company strongly preferred.
• Familiarity with wholesale electricity markets, demand response programs, and how residential assets participate in those markets is preferred.
• Proven ability to manage long, complex sales cycles with multiple stakeholders across large organizations.
• Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills.
• Exceptional analytical skills, including data analysis and financial modeling.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality work product.
• Ability to self-initiate and thrive in a fast-paced, high-throughput environment.
• Comfortable operating in ambiguity. This role requires someone who can figure out what residential partners need and how Voltus can best serve them, not someone who needs a fully defined playbook on day one.
• Strong cross-functional collaboration skills and the ability to work closely with internal teams to develop proposals and programs.
• Experience with Google Suite, Salesforce, and Slack preferred.
