The Commercial Electrical Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for commercial electrical construction projects. This role analyzes project plans, specifications, labor requirements, material costs, subcontractor pricing, and project schedules to develop comprehensive bid proposals. The estimator works closely with project managers, operations teams, vendors, subcontractors, and clients throughout the bidding and preconstruction process.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Review project drawings, specifications, contracts, and bid documents.
Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for electrical systems and components.
Develop accurate labor, material, equipment, and subcontractor cost estimates.
Solicit and evaluate vendor and subcontractor quotations.
Prepare complete bid proposals and supporting documentation.
Analyze project risks, opportunities, and scope gaps.
Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and project walkthroughs.
Coordinate with project managers and field leadership during project handoff.
Maintain estimating databases, labor units, and historical cost information.
Review change order requests and prepare cost impacts as required.
Ensure estimates comply with NEC requirements, local codes, and customer specifications.
Identify value engineering opportunities to improve project competitiveness.
Support contract negotiations and clarification meetings with clients.
Track bid results and maintain relationships with customers, vendors, and subcontractors.
Qualifications
Required
High school diploma or GED.
3+ years of commercial electrical estimating experience.
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
Knowledge of commercial electrical systems, methods, and materials.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Strong analytical, mathematical, and organizational skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
Preferred
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field.
Experience with estimating software such as Accubid, ConEst, McCormick, Bluebeam, or Trimble.
Field electrical construction experience.
Journeyman or Master Electrician license.
Experience estimating large commercial, healthcare, education, industrial, or data center projects.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Strong understanding of electrical construction practices and installation methods.
Ability to prioritize multiple bids and meet tight deadlines.
Effective negotiation and vendor management skills.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Knowledge of construction scheduling and project management principles.
Understanding of NEC, OSHA, and applicable building codes.
Physical Requirements
Prolonged periods of sitting and computer work.
Ability to travel to project sites, customer meetings, and pre-bid conferences.
Ability to review construction sites and navigate active job locations.
Working Conditions
Office environment with occasional field visits.
Regular interaction with clients, vendors, subcontractors, and project teams.
May require occasional overtime to meet bid deadlines.
