The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for Senior Associate Dean/Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs and Associate/Professor, Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine [R0153218]
ROLE of the POSITION
The Senior Associate Dean/Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs and Associate/Professor (non-tenure track) reports to the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs and Education of the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine (KSOM) and serves as a senior member of the leadership team of the Office of Academic Affairs and Education. The title of Senior Associate Dean or Associate Dean will be determined by the qualifications and prior experience of the successful candidate; the responsibilities of the position are identical at either rank.
The Senior Associate / Associate Dean provides strategic, operational, and administrative leadership for the full continuum of the medical student experience; from outreach, recruitment, and admissions through matriculation, academic progression, professional identity formation, and the transition to residency training.
The Senior Associate / Associate Dean directly supervises the Assistant Dean for Admissions, Recruitment, and Student Financial Services and the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and Career Services, and is accountable for the integrated leadership, performance management, and professional development of the professional and administrative staff across both reporting units.
The Senior Associate / Associate Dean partners with the Vice Dean in strategic planning, budget management, human resource management, compliance, facilities management, and IT management as they relate to admissions, recruitment, student financial services, student affairs, and career services.
The Senior Associate / Associate Dean is accountable to the Vice Dean for ensuring compliance with the accreditation standards of the Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME) as they relate to medical student selection and admission, medical student financial aid services, medical student academic records, medical student academic progression, medical student health and personal counseling, and career advising (LCME Standards 10, 11, and 12), and serves as a key contributor to the school's continuous quality improvement (CQI)
process.
The Senior Associate / Associate Dean leads the integration of admissions and student affairs functions to create a seamless, mission-aligned experience for applicants and students. Areas of oversight include the AMCAS-based application and admissions cycle and the work of the Admissions Committee; pipeline, recruitment, and holistic review programs; scholarship funding, Title IV federal financial aid, and student financial literacy; the learning communities program; the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) process; the
professionalism advocacy program; student mistreatment monitoring and reporting; career advising and the residency match; and major school events including Orientation, the White Coat Ceremony, Career Week, Match Day, and Commencement.
The Senior Associate / Associate Dean liaises with other offices and departments in the School of Medicine and the University, including the Dean's Office, the Office of Curriculum, the Office of Faculty Affairs, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the Office of Graduate Medical Education, UNLV Student Affairs, the UNLV Student Health Center.
Up to 0.2 FTE may be available for clinical activities, including attending duties within the appropriate clinical setting at UNLV Health. The clinical component may be negotiated based on the candidate’s qualifications, interests, and applicable clinical specialty.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires a M.D. from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and Seven to nine years of progressively responsible leadership in undergraduate medical education at an LCME-accredited medical school, including direct supervision of professional and administrative staff. Experience in admissions, financial aid, student affairs, career advising, and/or accreditation strongly required.
Credentials must be obtained prior to the start date.
BACKGROUND SCREENNING
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment background screening.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Ten or more years of progressively responsible medical school leadership, including senior dean-level oversight of two or more units; demonstrated experience leading or co-leading an LCME self-study, site visit, or interim DCI; and active leadership engagement with the AAMC.
The candidate’s educational credentials, terminal degree, experience in an academic medical institution or equivalency, research and scholarly activity will be considered in determining the candidate’s recommended rank. The SOM Faculty Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure (FAPT) Committee will use the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV (SOM) promotion criteria to recommend rank to the Dean of the SOM. Tenure consideration may be given upon hire on a case-by-case basis depending on verified previous credentials, the FAPT recommendation, and SOM Dean's recommendation.
