Product Design Engineer – Retail, Event, & Channel Product Design

Apple is seeking a product design engineer to join the Retail, Event, & Channel Product Design (RECPD) team. We are a diverse group of engineers who design and develop innovative fixtures and hardware solutions to unveil and display our products at Apple Special Events, and Apple retail / channel partner stores around the world. Our engineering solutions help elevate and showcase Apple products in magical and transformative ways!

As a member of the RECPD team, you will have the opportunity to learn and apply diverse knowledge spanning the design, production, and integration of electro-mechanical assemblies to store furniture and fixtures. Description

As part of RECPD, you will be responsible for the scoping, design, and engineering of products that meet the requirements of our customers. Successful design solutions are those that optimally balance performance, aesthetics, customer experience, reliability, manufacturability, cost, installation, and maintenance. Your responsibilities will include: technology development, concept generation, detailed design, analysis, and testing through mass production.

Responsibilities

• Developing design concepts and solutions to meet program requirements
• Designing 3D models of parts and assemblies, and drafting 2D documentation
• Building prototypes and creating test plans to evaluate designs against requirements
• Collaborating and communicating with creative partners such as Industrial Design, Product Marketing, MarCom, and Visual Merchandising
• Collaborating and communicating with technical partners such as manufacturing, operations, and external vendors to develop manufacturing and assembly processes
• Managing vendor relationships across both OEM and JDM development models
• Analyzing data generated experiments and builds to inform engineering decisions
• Traveling domestically and internationally to vendors and store locations in support of product development and product launches

Minimum Qualifications

• B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
• 5+ years demonstrated ability in mechanical design (preferably consumer electronics, or furniture & fixture design)
• Strong analytical/problem-solving skills and command of engineering fundamentals
• Strong communication and presentation skills to technical and non-technical audiences
• Ability to utilize data in effective written and verbal communication
• Experience with 3D CAD modeling and workflows
• Ability to travel up to 25% domestically and internationally

Preferred Qualifications

• Ability to self-motivate and drive issues to resolution across multiple projects.
• Experience working with contract manufacturers in an OEM or JDM model.
• Experience selecting and designing in plastic, metal, wood, ceramics, and glass.
• Experience in Design for Manufacturability (DFM), and Design for Assembly (DFA), statistical tolerance analysis techniques, functional dimensioning, and GD&T
• Experience in FEA and analysis tools
• Experience in failure / root cause analysis and DFMEA
• Experience with electro-mechanical integration (connectors, batteries, electronics packaging, PCBAs, EMI/EMC considerations).
• Flexibility and comfort working in dynamic environments.

At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $184,700 and $324,800, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
