About the Department
The University of Chicago Medicine Palliative Medicine program has been growing steadily since its establishment in 2006. The Outpatient Palliative Medicine Consult Service is comprised of 4 Palliative Medicine physicians and 1 APP, trained in palliative care principles and practices. The team is integrated within Oncology, Surgical-Oncology, and Neurology services to provide symptom management, goals of care and social support for patients with serious, life-limiting illnesses.
The goal of the team is to ensure patients’ symptoms are controlled, their spiritual needs are met, their families are aware of the course of the patients’ diseases, and the primary services are informed and supported by the team to ensure the best outcomes for the patients, throughout active treatment and at the end of life.
