Precision Steel Services has supplied steel across the Midwest since 1974. We are looking for an Estimator to turn customer requests into accurate, competitive quotes that help us win business.
Every order starts with a quote.
As an Estimator, you will review customer requests, prints, and specifications. You'll interpret what the customer is asking for and build a price that is accurate, competitive, and profitable. You'll work alongside Account Management, our data team, and the shop to make sure every quote reflects what we can actually deliver, and when.
You'll start on our standard quotes and learn our process step by step: customer review, pricing strategy, material utilization, processing costs, and a disciplined final check before anything goes out. More complex work, including outside sourcing and high-volume jobs, is trained as you demonstrate readiness.
This is not just math. It requires print-reading skill, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to work quickly through a high volume of requests without letting errors reach the customer. It is a technical role, and it is a competitive one.
What You'll Do
Review customer requests, emails, prints, and specifications to fully understand what the customer is asking for Verify that quote information is complete and accurate before pricing: dimensions, grades, quantities, and details
Identify special requirements such as testing, inspection, tolerances, or origin restrictions, and confirm them with the shop before quoting
Review customer history and win/loss patterns to set a competitive price position
Evaluate how parts fit standard stock sizes and account for unusable remnant and waste
Build and verify pricing in our pricing software, including material cost, markup, and processing costs such as burning
Recognize material we don't stock or processes we can't run in-house, and route those quotes correctly
Spot jobs that exceed volume, weight, or dollar thresholds and follow the defined escalation path
Document assumptions, lead times, and any changes clearly on the quote so the customer is never surprised
Run a final review of every quote for accuracy, minimums, and total-cost sanity before sending
Communicate your value-add and time-critical information to Account Management so they can win the order
Turn around urgent quotes quickly and communicate directly when timing is at risk
Help teammates when workloads spike and share what you learn with the team

Special requirements are verified and written on the quote before it is sent
Material and processing limitations are caught early and routed correctly
Waste and remnant are covered in the price, not absorbed by the company
Account Managers have what they need to win the order when they make the follow-up call
Urgent quotes are completed on time, or the Account Manager hears about a delay first
You maintain both accuracy and pace when the workload increases

Requirements
Required Qualifications
At least 1 year of on-the-job experience in estimating, pricing, or project management
At least 2 years of blueprint-reading experience, on the job or through education (mechanical prints preferred)
At least 1 year of experience using CAD software at an entry level, such as navigating views and dimensioning
Strong attention to detail and accuracy
Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
Comfortable using computers, email, and standard office software throughout the workday
Ability to learn ERP, pricing, and business intelligence systems
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Reliable attendance and ability to work the required on-site schedule
Preferred Qualifications
Estimating experience in steel, metals, fabrication, machining, or manufacturing
Experience using ERP, estimating, or cost-based pricing software
Experience reading mechanical prints, including GD&T, tolerances, finishes, and isometric views
Experience working with an operations or production team to estimate projects
Project management experience that required understanding many parts of a job in detail
Experience meeting daily or weekly quoting volume and turnaround expectations
Experience proofreading prints, quotes, or project documents for accuracy
Experience with Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Excel, or other Microsoft 365 applications

Starting Pay: $21.00–$26.00/hour, based on experience
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m.
This is a fully on-site position. Remote or hybrid work is not available.
