SUMMARY

Function: Performs patient care activities and services necessary in maintaining activities of daily living of patients.

Scope: Impacts patient care activities that do not require the attention of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN).

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Adheres to the standards of nursing care and the policies and procedures of the hospital. Performs basic procedures to include vital signs, intake and output and weights. Collects data and provides information to the patient Care Technician and/or registered nurse. Reports all changes in vital signs and abnormal values of any kind to the registered nurse. Documents all interventions and measurements in the patient's medical record. Maintains the work environment as assigned. Provides for patient's safety.

Utilizes available resources. Identifies self-development needs and seeks assistance in meeting those needs. Demonstrates behavior that reflects cooperation, commitment, adjustment, reliability, and initiative.

EDUCATION

Required: High school diploma or equivalent and currently enrolled full-time in an accredited nursing program. and

Preferred: Completed a minimum of one clinical semester/quarter prior to employment start date.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

There are two tracks for the Professional Student Nurse Extern. Track 1 will work with a Patient Care Technician and requires completion of one clinical semester/quarter. Track 2 will work with a clinical nurse and requires completion of two clinical semesters/quarters and enrollment in an accredited BSN program.
