Job Description
At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.
Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.
Role Type
Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to either the Milford Proving Grounds OR the Global Technical Center three (3) times per week, at minimum.
Join the innovative and high‑impact Planar Motion Coordination team within Global Systems Engineering, Safety, and Validation as a Senior System and System Safety Engineer. Our team defines and delivers the Vehicle Dynamics State Estimation and Vehicle Dynamics Motion Control systems that shape how every GM vehicle performs on the road.
In this multi-disciplined role, you will own the Vehicle Dynamics State Estimation (VDSE) System functional safety deliverables and support system design and requirement definition. VDSE is a foundational technology that fuses sensor data to calculate the vehicle’s dynamic state (reference velocity, accelerations, tire forces, and more), even in the presence of faults. This system enables a wide range of advanced control features across GM’s global portfolio.
Your work will directly impact vehicle safety and support GM’s vision of Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, and Zero Congestion.
● Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics or related field of study.
● 5+ years of relevant engineering experience, ideally in systems engineering or functional safety.
● Experience developing or integrating embedded control systems.
● Familiarity with ISO 26262 or other functional safety standards such as IEC 61508, IEC 62304, or DO-178C.
● Valid driver’s license with the ability to operate test vehicles as required.
● Experience in developing vehicle dynamics related products such as braking, steering, suspension, etc.
● Experience developing vehicle dynamics state estimation systems, controls architecture, or software.
● Experience owning an automotive functional safety case through a complete lifecycle.
● Understanding of distributed and networked real‑time control systems.

GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role. Do not apply for this role if you will need GM immigration sponsorship now or in the future. This includes direct company sponsorship, entry of GM as the immigration employer of record on a government form, and any work authorization requiring a written submission or other immigration support from the company (e.g., H1-B, OPT, STEM OPT, CPT, TN, J-1, etc).

This role is categorized as hybrid.
This means the selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location at least 3 times a week {or other frequency dictated by their manager}.

The selected candidate will be required to travel <25% for this role.

This job is not eligible for relocation benefits. Any relocation costs would be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

This position requires the ability to legally operate a motor vehicle on a regular basis and successfully complete a Motor Vehicle Report review.
