Job Description
The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) at Colorado State University (CSU) is hiring two Environmental GIS Support Supervisors to support the Department of the Air Force (DAF) Environmental GIS project. The project provides GIS support services and maintains 73 environmental data layers for more than 100 U.S. Air Force and Space Force installations.
Each supervisor will oversee approximately 8–12 off-campus Environmental GIS Support Analysts, provide technical leadership, coordinate project activities, and support data quality and standardization.
These full-time, fixed-term positions are based at the project’s Technical Support Center in Fort Collins, Colorado. Candidates living within commuting distance of the following areas may be considered for fully remote work, with occasional travel required: Cheyenne, Wyoming; Colorado’s I-25 and I-70 corridors, including Fort Collins, Denver, Colorado Springs, and Grand Junction; Phoenix, Arizona; Los Angeles, California (Lancaster/Palmdale preferred); Santa Barbara, California (including Lompoc and Santa Maria); San Francisco and
Sacramento, California; Shreveport, Louisiana; Omaha, Nebraska; Las Vegas, Nevada; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; San Antonio, Texas; and Salt Lake City, Utah.
CEMML is a research, education, and service unit within CSU’s Warner College of Natural Resources. CEMML applies science to support the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense and other public lands. Learn more at CEMML’s website .

Direct and oversee GIS staff supporting multiple installations, including work assignments, priorities, workload, performance, and compliance with project requirements, schedules, and quality standards.
Provide technical leadership, coaching, training, and professional development; support recruitment, onboarding, and performance management to achieve individual, team, and project objectives.
Ensure effective and professional communication between GIS staff and U.S. Air/Space Force installation GeoBase and Environmental Program personnel.
Direct implementation of GIS data standards, workflows, project guidance, and SOPs; coordinate periodic data quality reviews and ensure identified deficiencies are appropriately addressed.
Lead continuous improvement of GIS data completeness, accuracy, consistency, and spatial accuracy through data development, maintenance, standardization, technical support, and coordination of data collection activities.
Serve as a key point of coordination among installation GIS staff, project leadership, Environmental Program Managers, GeoBase personnel, and other stakeholders to identify needs, resolve issues, and support effective project execution.
Lead and participate in project meetings, presentations, stakeholder engagements, virtual site visits, and installation visits as needed to support data reviews, field data collection, and project objectives.
Monitor and communicate project progress, goals, activities, deliverables, deadlines, actions, and issues; consolidate staff status information and maintain documentation for leadership and sponsor reporting.
Develop and maintain project documentation, guidance, training materials, and other resources to promote consistent processes, knowledge sharing, and effective project execution.
Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for all new hires).
Must be able to comply with all applicable regulations to obtain a Department of Defense Common Access Card (CAC) and public trust clearance. Furthermore, candidates are required at a minimum to complete a NACI/SF85 and successfully pass a federal background check to remain eligible for employment by CSU. Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the proposed start date.
Periodically travel to US Air and Space Force Installations as necessary for data collection and development for up to a week in duration.
This position may require fieldwork to obtain environmental data, which includes possibly walking long distances in adverse terrain and weather conditions, carrying all necessary supplies and equipment (less than 45lbs).
Relocation expenses are NOT available for this position.
Supervises 8-12 off-campus employees, specifically Environmental GIS Support Analysts located at various military installations in the central and western US, and will work closely with the project’s Quality Control team to monitor and enhance overall data quality and standardization.
Compensation
$72,500 - $77,500
