Energy Operations (EO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, efficient, and sustainable operation and maintenance of Stanford University’s critical energy and utility infrastructure. The department supports the campus community by operating and maintaining central energy facilities, thermal systems, electrical distribution systems, utility networks, controls, metering, and related equipment serving the main campus, Stanford Redwood City, and other university facilities.
Energy Operations provides essential 24/7 services that support teaching, research, healthcare, residential life, and campus operations. Our work includes the generation and distribution of chilled water, low-temperature hot water, steam, and electrical power; maintenance of utility infrastructure and street lighting; and operation of sophisticated control, monitoring, and optimization systems.
Our team includes skilled operations professionals, maintenance mechanics, electricians, instrumentation and controls technicians, supervisors, apprentices, engineers, and administrative staff. The duties listed under the Characteristic Duties section are designed to provide a representative sampling of key tasks and responsibilities associated with the job. They are not intended to be a complete list of all duties performed by employees in the classification.
Working under general supervision, the Electrician Maintenance performs journey-level work involved with the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment, and if permitted, new construction and remodels. The employee may work alone or as part of a crew depending on the work assignment. Assignments are normally received in the form of work orders, blueprints, sketches, or verbal instructions.
Routine work is performed independently and inspected in progress and upon completion for compliance with specifications. Direction is received from a Journeyman High Volt Electrician, Lead Person, or Supervisor.
An Electrician Maintenance person does not perform tasks that require a qualified High Voltage Electrician unless specifically trained and under the direct supervision of a High Voltage Electrician Specialist, Lead Person, or Supervisor.
An Electrician Maintenance person will always perform tasks in accordance with Stanford and departmental administrative and safety standards, especially the Stanford Electric Safety and Operations Program (ESOP).
An Electrician Maintenance person uses tools, materials, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE) provided by Stanford appropriately and as directed in the performance of work at all times.
The Electrician Maintenance performs journey-level work in the following areas and equipment:
Required Qualifications (in addition to those listed under Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):
Ability to make repairs on all equipment encountered, diagnose electrical trouble, and make new installations with a minimum of supervision and technical advice.
Willingness to work in restricted spaces and high places.
Must be a qualified journey electrician and have work experience in electrical construction, if permitted, and the installation, maintenance, and operations of a wide variety of electrical equipment.
Must be available to work overtime and available for callbacks.
Energy Operations Team supports the University by managing installation, operation, and maintenance of the electrical distribution infrastructure while providing the highest quality services to students and other members of the university community in a sustainable and fiscally responsible manner.
