Employer job description
From Certara's posting. “We” and “our” refer to the employer.
Overview
Certara accelerates medicines using proprietary biosimulation software, technology and services to transform traditional drug discovery and development. Its clients include more than 2,000 biopharmaceutical companies, academic institutions and regulatory agencies across 62 countries. Certara touches more than 80% of all drugs that are approved by the FDA and is constantly working to efficiently and effectively guide its customers through drug approval.
As a Senior Software Engineer on Pulse, you will design, build, and maintain the shared integration services that enable secure, event-based communication and data exchange across Certara applications. Pulse is not an end-user product; it is a foundational platform capability that underpins cross-product workflows, file exchange, and system-to-system integration. Your expertise commitment to delivering high-quality, secure, and compliant solutions will guide your day to day.
You will collaborate with product, architecture, security, and engineering teams in an agile environment to deliver a scalable, well-governed platform that other Certara teams can adopt with confidence.
Responsibilities
- Platform Engineering
- Design, develop, and maintain Pulse services, APIs, and event contracts used by multiple Certara applications
- Be responsible for one or more significant components of the Pulse platform, including its reliability, performance, and operability in a SaaS environment
- Build secure, scalable patterns for event-based messaging and file/data exchange, and avoid ad hoc point-to-point integrations
- Security & Compliance
- Implement identity-based authentication and authorization (for example RBAC, ABAC, ReBAC, IAM) across Pulse services
- Translate security, data governance, and regulatory expectations into well-tested engineering solutions
- Quality & Delivery
- Author and review unit, integration, and contract tests; participate in code and design reviews
- Break complex deliverables into smaller parts and deliver them incrementally to enable collaboration
- Consistently produce deliverables that do not require revision
- Collaboration & Leadership
- Collaborate with the Technical Product Manager on requirements elicitation, backlog refinement, and technical trade-offs
- Partner with consuming application teams to onboard them to Pulse and support adoption
- Oversee the work of engineers at lower levels and provide significant feedback to team efforts
- Contribute to process improvements, architecture documentation, and team process documentation
- Identify and anticipate risks related to their own work and communicate them proactively to product leadership
- Show initiative beyond checking tasks off a list; identify and suggest future work for themselves and the team
- Actively use AI coding assistants and agentic tools to accelerate design, development, testing, and documentation, while applying sound engineering judgment and review to AI-generated code
- Build relationships to solve problems directly and limit management escalations
Qualifications
- Required Qualifications
- 6+ years of experience in similar software engineering roles
- Experience building and operating APIs and event-driven or messaging-based systems
- Solid understanding of authentication and authorization concepts and secure coding practices
- Experience working in a highly collaborative agile software organization
- Willingness to embrace AI-assisted development and to continuously learn and adopt new AI tools and workflows as they evolve
- Ability to operate effectively in ambiguous environments and to own significant modules end to end
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with shared services, integration platforms, messaging systems, or data pipelines
- Knowledge of enterprise identity models such as RBAC, ABAC, ReBAC, and AWS IAM
- Experience with cloud-hosted (AWS) SaaS architectures
- Experience in regulated or compliance-aware life sciences environments
- Certara bases all employment-related decision on merit, taking into consideration qualifications, skills, achievement, and performance. We treat all applicants and employees without regard to personal characteristics such as race, color, ethnicity, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, nationality, marital status, pregnancy, physical or mental condition, genetic information, military service, or other characteristic protected by law.
